Induction motors

DOL starters are used for motors with low power ratings where the starting current does not damage the motor windings. Direct online starters are used for small water pumps, conveyor belts, fans, and compressors when the starting current does not produce significant fluctuations in the line voltage

Step 1: From the motor nameplate, know size of the motor. This motor size is always in horsepower (HP).

Step 2: Determine the motor's Full Load Current (FLC).

Step 3: Factor in safety by adding 50% to the FLC calculated in step 2 above

For example your motors FLC is 9A

Add 50 % to it. You get 13.5A

Hence from the nearest 6 - 10A and 9 - 14A starters available it is prudent to choose 9 - 14A.

The Direct On Line (DOL) starter is the simplest and most common type of motor starter. It's suitable for small motors, where a high surge of current doesn't cause a major issue. The DOL starter directly connects the motor terminals to the power supply
